Valencia win controversial derby

Valencia defeated local rivals Levante on Sunday to end a run of six straight defeats and regain third spot from Real Madrid.

It has been a tough few weeks for Los Che as they lost both Copa del Rey semi-finals against Barcelona and also suffered league defeats against both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Santi Minta had given the hosts the lead in the 17th minute but struggling Levante hit back a minute later through Sergio Postigo to level the score.

The turning point came midway through the second half as Coke had a strike harshly ruled out for the visitors for the visitors, with Luciano Vietto netting for Valencia in the next phase of play.

Mina then struck a post before Dani Parejo converted a late spot kick, which was controversially awarded for a supposed Rober Pier foul on Simone Zaza.

Marcelino’s men trail second-placed Atleti by nine points but leapfrog Madrid in the standings, while Levante lie 17th – one place above the relegation zone.
