Atletico Madrid are targeting a deal for Villarreal’s highly-rated midfielder Rodri Hernandez, a former youth product of the club.
The 21-year-old spent six years at Atleti’s academy before joining the Yellow Submarine in 2013 and has gone on to make 56 appearances for the club.
The central midfielder is now a transfer target for Los Rojiblancos, report Diario AS, and they will attempt to line up a deal for the Spanish Under-21 international next summer.
Diego Simeone’s side wish to sign the midfielder now but realise that this will be tough, but are confident of facilitating a deal for summer.
Sime Vrsaljko, Kevin Gameiro and Lucas Vietto are among the players who are likely to be sold to raise funds, while Antoine Griezmann may also exit the club.
Spanish international duo Vitolo and Diego Costa will become available for selection for Atletico in January 2018.
