Pablo Machin believes Girona showed they “can compete with anyone” after ‘deservedly’ beating Real Madrid 2-1 on Sunday.
Goals from Portu and Cristhian Stuani secured a historic victory for Girona in their first-ever encounter with Madrid after Isco had given them the lead, prompting Machin to hail his players for keeping the faith.
“We deserved to beat Real Madrid, through our game, attitude and chances throughout the match,” the Coach said after the game.
“I told my players at half-time that we had to keep the faith in what we were doing because in football, you get out what you put in.
“We played, competed and won in the end. The celebrations were spectacular, but less spectacular than others before, and that shows me the team are mature and can compete with anyone.
“One of the keys was the brave approach we adopted from the first minute. We couldn’t host Madrid and not be ourselves.”
