Depor sack Pepe Mel after 8 months

Deportivo La Coruna have terminated the contract of Coach Pepe Mel less than eight months after his appointment.

Mel won only six of his 24 matches in charge of the Galicians including only two from nine La Liga outings this season, a run which has included five defeats.

Monday evening’s home defeat against Girona – the Catalan club recording their first ever top flight away win – was the final straw for Depor, who lie 16th in the standings.

Club president Tino Fernandez broke the news to the former Real Betis and West Bromwich Albion boss via phone call earlier on Tuesday, before the club released a statement confirming the news.

Mel becomes the fourth La Liga Coach of the season to lose his job following the dismissals of Luis Zubeldia at Alaves and Fran Escriba at Villarreal, while Manolo Marquez resigned at Las Palmas.
