Marcelo: Benzema Europe’s best

Real Madrid left-back Marcelo claims Karim Benzema is “the best No 9 in Europe” and that “people forget how difficult it is to win in La Liga.”

Benzema started as a substitute for Madrid’s match against Eibar on Sunday but came off the bench to assist Marcelo in a 3-0 victory.

“Certainly, the best thing was the result,” the left-back said after the game.

“I’m very happy to have scored, but the most important thing was to win. The result was very good and we had a great game. We did well.

“People forget how difficult it is to play in the Spanish League. It’s very difficult, it has the best teams.

“We did a great job and were very serious [in our approach]. We scored three goals… It’s very difficult to win a game in La Liga.

“Benzema? He’s a great player. Cristiano scores a lot of goals, but so does Benzema. There’s also Asensio, Isco…

“It’s normal for the fans to ask for more, that they want strikers to score goals, but he’s doing more than that.

“He assists, moves around… For me, he’s the best No 9 in Europe. It’s not about defending him, although I am to death with my teammates.

“I won’t lie, Benzema is a star, like all my teammates. Grabbing my badge during my goal celebration? Because I belong to Madrid.”
