Maxi stars again for Celta

Celta Vigo threw away the lead twice to draw 3-3 with Girona on Friday, but Maxi Gomez got on the scoresheet again.

Maxi scored his fifth goal in just seven appearances to equalise for 2-2 after Portu and Cristhian Stuani cancelled out Pione Sisto’s opener, until Juanpe rescued the new boys a point at the death.

“I got back to scoring against Girona, but I left the field angry because we didn’t win,” the striker told Marca.

“Several points have already escaped our grasp because our opponents have come back from behind.

“We’re playing well, but we’ve made mistakes and we have to improve in that aspect. For example, the first 15 minutes against Girona were very strange.

“I don’t think we have to change things because the team are very good as it is, but within that, we can improve in terms of mistakes that cost us points.”

Only Lionel Messi has scored more goals in La Liga than the 21-year-old, who joined Celta over the summer from Uruguayan side Defensor Sporting.

However, he will miss the Galicians’ next game against Las Palmas after already picking up five bookings, mainly for diving in the penalty area.

“I didn’t expect to have played every game and scored so many goals,” he added.

“I’m very happy for myself, my teammates and those who put their faith in me.

“Yellow-card ban? It gives me a sour taste. I’ve already seen five yellows and the truth is that I’ve been punished by referees, who think I’ve thrown myself in the box.

“It annoys me, but you have to look forward and improve.”

Maxi has yet to represent Uruguay at international level, but the starlet is certainly putting himself in contention for the 2018 World Cup as it stands, providing his country qualify.

“I hope I can make my debut and that Uruguay qualify for the World Cup, which would be the most beautiful thing for my country,” he concluded.
