Messi wreaks Juve revenge

Lionel Messi wreaked revenge on Juventus as his brace fired Barcelona to a 3-0 victory in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.

However, it was Juve who started the brighter. Douglas Costa broke away and found Paulo Dybala with a through ball, but the forward’s angled finish was saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Miralem Pjanic then dragged a shot on target, which Ter Stegen pushed away before gathering.

That was to be the last, real Bianconeri chance for some time as Buffon was soon called into action, tipping over Luis Suarez’s curler on the rebound!

With the last kick of the first half, Messi drove towards the Old Lady’s box, before playing a one-two with Suarez and angling a snapshot past the stunned goalkeeper.

Gerard Pique’s miscued sliding tackle gifted Paulo Dybala a rare shot in the Catalans’ box, but the No 10 blazed over first time.

The Argentine almost caught out Juve again with a quick-fire shot, which clipped Buffon’s far post with the goalkeeper well beaten.

He continued to plug away, forcing a save from Buffon at his near post, and the rebound fell straight to Ivan Rakitic, who made no mistake.

Andrea Barzagli was lucky to have a man behind him when he took out Dembele on the edge of the box, and Buffon had to tip Messi’s free kick around the post.

Suarez flicked Jordi Alba’s near-post cross just too high, but Messi wasn’t so forgiving. The little genius took on Andres Iniesta’s switch of play, danced his way around Juve’s centre-backs and buried a shot into the bottom right.

Buffon spilled Alba’s cross and Suarez mopped up for goal No 4, but the left-back was adjudged offside when he played the ball in.

Looking to capitalise on the hosts’ easing off, Dybala had a shot from distance pushed away by Ter Stegen, before Medhi Benatia’s header was cleared by Pique on the line.
