Eduardo Berizzo praised his Sevilla side for taking ‘an important step’ towards the Champions League group stages with a win in Istanbul.
The 47-year-old got off to a winning start as Los Rojiblancos boss with a 2-1 win at Istanbul Basaksehir, thanks to goals from Sergio Escudero and Wissam Ben Yedder.
“This was an important step in our ambitions but we must perform strongly again in Seville,” Berizzo is quoted by Estadio Deportivo as saying after the game.
“We enjoyed a lot of control in the first half and we should have scored more – we created five or six clear cut chances.
“In the second half we lost control a little bit and they hurt us, but this is an important lesson for us.
“The result is positive – two away goals and a victory – but it is not decisive and we must be aware of this.
“The return leg is a totally different game, in different circumstances against a highly motivated and quality team.
“Our ambition is to be at the very top of European football so we will keep working towards this goal.”
