Zidane: Madrid almost perfect

Zinedine Zidane felt Real Madrid were “almost perfect” during their 2-1 win against Manchester United in the European Super Cup on Tuesday.

Goals from Casemiro and Isco in Skopje ensured Madrid retained the trophy, despite Romelu Lukaku’s goal back for United, and Zidane hailed his team’s “hunger” to keep winning.

“We have a lot of talent in the team and with hard work you can achieve many things,” the Coach said after the game via UEFA.com.

“They are a hungry team, they want more. Today’s game has been almost perfect, the first half was spectacular and we suffered a bit in the second half but it is a final and it’s normal things like this happen.

“If we’d scored a third goal from Gareth [Bale], that would have been it. We’ve got character and we’re a hungry team.

“We never get tired of winning. The key thing against a team like this is, if you control two or three things they do very well like the second balls, playing high, we controlled that well in the centre of the field.

“But we pressured them high upfield and didn’t let them play. What was really important was when we had the ball we were cool and took our time and achieved what we wanted.

“We have the ambition of doing things better all the time and today, compared to the last three or four games, it was a lot better.

“From the first minute we were in the game until the end. It was spectacular. It is going to be harder this year – we will have difficult games but the good thing we have is we want to carry on with this good run.

“You cannot play and play beautiful football at the same level for 90 minutes. We played at a high quality, we suffered, yes, but we controlled the game.

“If Gareth Bale scores the third it’s over. But we were against an opponent who wanted to cause us problems and it’s normal if we suffered a bit.”
