Ramos: One step closer

Sergio Ramos believes Spain are “one step closer to the World Cup” after their 2-1 win against FYR Macedonia on Sunday.

Spain all-but-secured a top-two place in Group B with victory in Skopje, prompting Ramos to suggest top spot would be decided by September’s showdown against Italy.

“The objective was to pick up three points in a difficult match. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” the Real Madrid defender said after the game.

“They pushed more in the second half, but we’re happy and we want to rest now.

“Italy? It’ll be a complicated match, at home, against a great national team.

“They also won and we’re thinking about returning in the best way possible. We’re one step closer to the World Cup.

“Nadal winning his 10th French Open? I take this opportunity to congratulate him.

“He’s an icon of Spanish sport, he’s one of the greats of Spanish sport and he’s also a madridista.”
