Atleti secure third with lucky Betis draw

Atletico Madrid laboured to a fortunate draw away to Real Betis to secure third place and automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Dani Ceballos’ stunning effort gave Los Verdiblancos a deserved lead before Stefan Savic’s controversial goal earned an unmerited point for Diego Simeone’s men, who appeared to be feeling the effects of their European schedule.

Goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a string of saves in the first half to deny Ruben Castro, Ceballos, Joaquin and Darko Brasanac to ensure the scores were level at the break.

Ceballos – a long-rumoured transfer target of Los Rojiblancos – then gave the hosts, under the guidance of caretaker boss Alexis Truijillo, the lead with a stunning volley.

However, the Montenegrin defender then levelled proceedings soon after despite appearing to net with the use of his hand.

Due to Sevilla’s loss at Real Madrid, Atleti would have secured a top three place regardless but their place in the next season’s Champions League group stages is now guaranteed.
