Sevilla Coach Jorge Sampaoli is the only candidate for the Argentine national job, according to AFA president Claudio Tapia.
Argentina have not appointed a new manager since Edgardo Bauza’s dismissal last month with their hopes of qualification for the 2018 World Cup hanging in the balance.
The AFA would need to pay Sevilla €1.5m to trigger the release clause in his contract at Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan, which expires next summer.
"He is the chosen Coach. We have to wait for the contractual terms to discuss things with Sevilla,” Tapia told ESPN Argentina.
"We have chosen a Coach that has a contract. We want to be respectful and wait because he has a release clause which is once the tournament ends.
“We will communicate it to the club and we will sit down and negotiate his departure and release clause.
“We want things to go well in the final games he has left [Malaga, Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Osasuna]."
Sampaoli has admitted he had an offer from the AFA but he would not discuss it until the end of Sevilla’s La Liga campaign.
