Lucas signs new Atleti deal

Highly-rated French defender Lucas Hernandez has signed a new long-term contract at Atletico Madrid, committing to the club until 2022.

The 21-year-old, who has made 20 starts for Los Rojiblancos this campaign, had been linked with a move to Manchester City or Barcelona but has expressed his delight to have signed a new deal with "the club of my life."

An Atletico statement read: Atletico issued a statement that said: "Lucas Hernandez has extended his contract with Atletico for two more seasons.

"Since his beginning in Atletico's lower categories, his career has been brilliant, standing out in all the stages until he made it into the first team in the 2015-16 season.

"This season, the French left-back has continued his great progression, playing 20 matches so far. He is also a regular in the squad lists of the French under-21 national team."

The club’s sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero added: "This is a joyous moment for Atleti as [Lucas] is a player with enormous potential through his spectacular strength and speed.

"Also, he is impressively mature and very committed, always performing at a high level. This is great news for us."

The news comes amid continued speculation that the defender’s younger brother Theo – currently on loan at Alaves – will leave to join Real Madrid or Barcelona this summer.

Earlier this year Lucas was handed a community service sentence after an altercation with his ex-girlfriend.
