Sevilla name Monchi successor

Sevilla have named Monchi’s right-hand man, Oscar Arias, as their new sporting director.

Arias has been promoted to the position after four years working alongside Monchi, who recently called time on his four-decade-long spell with Sevilla.

The Germany-born Spaniard was raised in nearby Huelva and played as a midfielder for Recreativo over two spells prior to his retirement from professional football in 2002.

He then began working with the club’s youth sector, before being promoted to technical secretary after the sudden death of Pepe Rivera in 2004.

Arias’ work helped Recre gain promotion to La Liga a year later and subsequently spend three seasons in the top flight.

He left to take up the same position at Las Palmas in 2009, laying in part the foundations for the islanders’ return to the Primera two years ago.

The 51-year-old will be formally unveiled as the Andalusians’ new sporting director next week.
