Mel: Sporting not life or death, but…

Pepe Mel says that while Deportivo La Coruna’s trip to Sporting Gijon is not “life or death”, a win would “reaffirm” their improvement.

Mel’s reign at Depor began with a credible 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, and the Coach explained his side would return “to square one” if they failed to beat relegation rivals Sporting.

“A win would reaffirm all the good things of Wednesday, that the fans can see things with optimism and raise their hands,” he said at a Press conference.

“Failing to do so would take us back to square one. That’s what I explained to the players.

“It would be foolhardy to talk about the match being life or death when there are still 13 games to go.

“Sporting are an old acquaintance of mine. They’re a young team, one that play with very quick transitions, so we must be attentive to that.

“They’ve signed well, with players that know what they want in La Liga.

“El Molinon? A footballer that’s scared of such an atmosphere can’t be a great professional. You must isolate yourself.”
