Pepe Mel has explained how being appointed as new Coach of Deportivo La Coruna was the perfect birthday present.
The former Real Betis and West Bromwich Albion boss celebrated his 54th birthday on Tuesday and was also presented as the new manager of the Galicians following Gaizka Garitano’s dismissal.
"My wife asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I replied, 'a team' then very quickly I signed for Depor," joked Mel on El Partidazo de Cope.
Mel also explained why he left social media: “I had a twitter account with over 200,000 followers but it is largely a platform for insulting and that is what happens when people do not agree with you, so I closed it.”
The new Depor Coach, appointed until the end of the current campaign, was also questioned about a return to Betis to take on his boyhood club whom he both played for and had two spells as manager: “It will be a very special day if that happens at Estadio Benito Villamarin – it could be a very difficult and emotional day for me.”
