Mel appointed at Deportivo

Former Real Betis and West Bromwich Albion Coach Pepe Mel will be appointed at Deportivo La Coruna following the dismissal of Gaizka Garitano.

Mel – sacked from his second stint in charge of Los Verdiblancos last January – was in the running to replace Victor Sanchez del Amo (ironically now at Betis) at the helm at Estadio Riazor in June 2016.

The Galicians confirmed he would be appointed on Tuesday in a statement on their website following reports in Marca and AS that he was set for the role.

"The administration council of RC Deportivo has taken the decision to terminate the contract of Gaizka Garitano as Coach of the first team,” a Depor statement read on Sunday evening after a run of four straight defeats and no victories in 2017.

"The club wishes to thank the Basque coach and his staff for their dedication, effort and professionalism during their time guiding the team.

"Deportivo B Coach Cristobal Parralo will manage Monday's training session."
