Season over for Villarreal’s Asenjo

Villarreal have confirmed that goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo damaged knee ligaments against Real Madrid, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

Asenjo was forced off in just the 34th minute of Villarreal’s 3-2 defeat to Madrid on Sunday, and Villarreal have since reported on their website that the Spain international “ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] in his left knee”.

“Villarreal want to offer their full support to the footballer, give him lots of support and wish him a quick and successful recovery. #AnimoAsenjo,” the club added in their statement.

Asenjo, 27, suffered the same injury in his right knee two years ago and only regained ownership of the Yellow Submarine’s No 1 jersey at the start of the season.
