Vazquez, Kovacic suffer setbacks

Real Madrid have confirmed Lucas Vazquez and Mateo Kovacic are both injured and will miss both legs of their Copa Del Rey clash with Sevilla.

Madrid say both players sustained the injuries in the Club World Cup final win over Kashima Antlers but only confirmed their injuries on Thursday – eleven days after the fixture.

Vazquez has a muscle injury in his right leg while the substitute Kovacic twisted a ligament in his ankle after coming on late in the game.

Both players have played an increasingly key role for Los Blancos this campaign – former Espanyol winger Vazquez coming to prominence particularly following the injury to Gareth Bale, while the Croatian Kovacic has excelled when playing in place of Luka Modric or Casemiro, who have both had injuries of their own this season.

The club have not confirmed the length or extent of their injuries, but it is reported they will both return in the second half of January.
