Muniain: Critics exaggerate

Iker Muniain claims criticism of Athletic Bilbao’s poor away form is exaggerated. “For some, not winning away from home is akin to the world ending.”

Athletic have lost four of their last trips on the road in La Liga, with their only two wins coming in mid-September, yet are nonetheless one point away from leapfrogging Basque rivals Eibar into seventh.

“It’s a crucial game. At home we’ve only lost once and we’re compensating for what we’re not doing on our travels,” the attacker told Marca ahead of Monday’s clash with Celta Vigo.

“I’m convinced that we’ll get better results and not go crazy. For some people, not winning away from home is akin to the world ending.

“There are many twists and turns. We have to be aware of who we are and that what counts is winning, which is why we’ll be fine.

“Possible injury in training? I took a knock to my quadriceps, but there won’t be any problems.

“Playing on Monday? It’s strange, although we’ll have the opportunity to rest and prepare more for the game.

“I’m playing with spark and strength but I must do so until the end of the season. My objective is to give the team everything they need.

“When I play as a winger, [Ernesto Valverde] also tells me to look inside. He always gives me the opportunity to get involved.

“I still have a lot to learn and room for improvement, but I have more motivation and enthusiasm than ever before.

“The time that I spent out injured made me realise things that will bode me very well for the future.”
