I rode my luck, admits Ramos

Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos admitted he rode his luck in not being sent off during the Club World Cup final, although “my first yellow was very, very harsh”.

Ramos appeared to commit a foul worthy of a second yellow card in Madrid’s eventual 4-2 win against Kashima Antlers as he held back an opponent in a counterattacking situation, and the defender confessed “I saw the writing on the wall”.

“It was difficult against a team that made it difficult, took us to extra time and made us suffer,” he said after the game.

“They put in a lot of intensity and took their chances, but above all we’re proud of closing the year with another trophy. It’s a prize for our work.

“They had chances to complicate the game more but didn’t take them. We also had chances that didn’t turn into goals, but with the players we have in attack, they made the difference.

“We suffered but didn’t give in. In football, you have to play against what’s in front of you.

“If you think that you’re going to win with the shirt you’re wearing, you’re wrong. Luck counts, but so does talent.

“Something big this season? We’re on our way. We don’t have to brag about it, but we’re enjoying what we’re doing. There’s still the entire season left, an exciting La Liga.

“Should have I been sent off? My first yellow was very, very harsh in my view of football.

“I wouldn’t have given it, but for the second [incident], I was hoping that my luck would change a little. The referee treated me the way he did.

“Fleeing after the foul? I saw the writing on the wall and the sooner I left the scene, the better.”
