James Rodriguez has been backed to be a success at Real Madrid but must 'knuckle down', say former stars of both Madrid clubs.

Former Atletico Madrid and Colombia defender believes that the club he is at means he receives unfair pressure as it is 'not such a loving place', but he believed he would prove his critics wrong.

"I am surprised that he does not play so much," Perea told Marca.

"To play more again, he must get back to what he did.

"Madrid is a very demanding place, not such a loving place. He must knuckle down to work and analyse what has happened — that is the only way to get back on track."

Meanwhile, former Real Madrid star and current club ambassador Roberto Carlos believes he will be a great player for Los Blancos.

"If James were so bad he would not be Colombia captain," he told AS.

There is debate over him, but he is at the best team in the world.

"He needs an arm around the shoulder — I also needed that at one point. He must have belief in himself as he is a great player."
