Tebas presidency to be unopposed

Javier Tebas is expected to run unopposed for the presidency of LaLiga after his sole rival Alex Aranzabal withdrew due to lack of support.

Tebas, who assumed office in April 2013, had stepped down from the role in order to call an early election in a controversial move which was seen as catching rivals off-guard and not allowing them sufficient time to win the sufficient level of support of clubs to challenge him.

Self-declared Real Madrid fan Tebas had been expected to face the challenge of former Eibar president Aranzabal, but on Tuesday night he released a press statement to confirm he was withdrawing due to lack of support.

Aranzabal's statement criticised the electoral process which saw many clubs pledge their allegiance to Tebas before any rivals had been declared and questioned the decision-making whereby clubs could not endorse more than one candidate, stating that it comprimised the rules of the presidency.

The statement also pointed to the lack of support that Tebas enjoys among match-going fans, who believe his presidency has seen rocketing ticket prices, unwelcome match times and general lack of care for fans.
