Pareja ‘can’t explain’ Sevilla loss

Sevilla defender Nico Pareja says he is at a loss to explain how his team eventually lost the European Super Cup to Real Madrid.

Dani Carvajal’s wonder goal a minute from the end of extra time made it 3-2 for Los Blancos , but Pareja feels it was Sergio Ramos’ stoppage time leveller that should have been prevented.

“There’s not much explanation for what happened but it was down to one small detail in a match we had won,” the Argentine central defender told reporters.

“We wanted to win and at the last second it got away from us, but we played a great match and at the start of the season we didn’t expect it to go as well.

“But you can’t give Madrid any glimmer of hope because a small mistake can turn a game, so we must learn from the mistakes we made here.”

Despite his disappointment at not winning, Pareja was satisfied at the performance of his team and believes it bodes well for the new season.

“We handled the ball well, found spaces, pressed up the pitch and did not let them play.

“We are leaving with our heads held high against a difficult rival, but we have a competitive streak and now have another final against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup,” maintained the Sevilla captain.
