‘Biggest club must win biggest prize’

Toni Kroos insists Real Madrid are “expected” to win the Champions League as “the biggest club must win the biggest competition”.

Madrid are the most successful club in the history of Europe’s elite club competition, winning a total of 10 European cups, and Kroos made it clear his side were obliged to beat Atletico Madrid on Saturday in order for the season to be regarded a success.

“[Winning the CL] would make it a good season. We must win this last game,” he told Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

“That’s what is expected of Real Madrid. The biggest club must win the biggest competition.

“In the League, we came to within a point of Barcelona, but that doesn’t buy us anything.

“In general, things with [Rafa Benitez] didn’t work and the team struggled.

“That’s something the club corrected and we’ve all improved under [Zinedine] Zidane, also on a personal level.”
