Gabi: Atleti playing for history

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi wants the team to mark the club’s 113th anniversary by beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final.

Los Colchoneros celebrated their birthday on Tuesday and meet Bayern a day later, the skipper telling a Press conference that the club, including the players and the fans, know what the fixture means.

“The people of Atletico have realised what’s at stake. We’re playing to enter history. We’re 113 [on Tuesday] and there’s nothing more beautiful to play for. People will respond to that, for sure,” Gabi insisted, AS reports.

“Above all, we’re excited. As I said before [the quarter-final win over Barcelona], these are the games you dream about. We’ve earned this opportunity. The enthusiasm I see in my teammates is what I would stress the most.

“My impression of Bayern is that they’re so good they have a lot of variations. We’ll face the best team, along with Barcelona, the two favourites. I’m sure Pep Guardiola will be prepared in the best way and to do the best.

“Nobody made us favourites at the start of the season. We’re competing with the best with the way we play and the way we understand life. We don’t hide, but we’re not favourites. But we will fight for this final.”
