‘Spain remain the team to beat’

Thiago Alcantara suggests everyone will want to beat Spain at Euro 2016 even though Germany are world champions.

The Bayern Munich midfielder spoke to Onda Cero about the summer tournament and said La Roja remain the team to beat.

“I think Spain are the reference even though Germany won the World Cup,” AS quotes Thiago as saying.

“Our rivals are keen to beat Spain. Our challenge is to keep the voracious hunger to win trophies.

“It’s true we have one of the toughest groups. If we get through the group we’ll be on a roll for the next phase.

“We have very good forwards, the centre of midfield is well-stocked and it’s the same in defence.”

Thiago, formerly of Barcelona, noted the Blaugrana influence on Spain’s style over the successful last few years.

“Spain has instilled a similar football to Barca in the last eight years, with the Barca player base and incorporating other talents. That’s made other teams want to play like us,” he added.

“In this team we do the maximum to stay on top. We have that desire. When you’re not competing at your maximum, you go away and someone else can take advantage.”
