Benzema to sue French newspaper

Karim Benzema’s lawyer has announced that the Real Madrid striker will sue a French newspaper which linked him with drug trafficking and money laundering.

Liberation associated Benzema with a second ongoing investigation into criminal acts on Friday, but it has since surfaced that he was only summoned as a witness, prompting Eric Dupond-Moretti and his client to take legal action against the publication for their ill-conceived portrayal of the story.

“He was a simple witness!” he told L’Equipe.

“He’s the only witness of a case I’ve seen who has been used as the front page of a newspaper, as if he were guilty of a series of terms such as ‘mess’, ‘money laundering’ and ‘drugs’.”

Benzema is understood to have given evidence last January as part of an investigation by Paris prosecutors into an alleged money-laundering and drug-trafficking ring.

The France international also reportedly helped a friend purchase a restaurant, which is suspected to have been used for illicit purposes.
