Jose Gimenez acknowledged Atletico Madrid wanted to beat PSV Eindhoven in 90 minutes and praised the Vicente Calderon crowd.
Gimenez was among the successful penalty scorers as the tie was decided from 12 yards, both legs having finished 0-0.
“It was a divine, beautiful game. We’re very happy with the win and the fans. The supporters were amazing today,” he told reporters, according to AS.
“It was a game we didn’t expect not to score in. We wanted to win in 90 minutes but they did a very good job defensively. We tried to keep our clean sheet because if we conceded it would be very complicated.
“And then came the shootout, which is a toss of a coin. We deserved to win in the game.
“It’s difficult to choose [a quarter-final opponent] because anyone reaching this stage did very good things.
“We know the opponent will be very difficult and if we’re to reach our objective we have to beat them all.”
