Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has attempted to explain how to mark Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
In an interview with Eurosport Italia, the Italy international told of the differences faced when marking the pair, although when trying to stop Messi he admits he employs a more unconventional tactic.
“In the last few years a defender’s role has changed and everyone has to be good at understanding their own role,” he said.
“Experience helps you read certain situations better and make less mistakes in terms of behaviour. Knowing your opponent is also important, too, individually as well as the team.
“How do you mark Ronaldo? You try not to leave him alone and don’t let him shoot on his right foot. Messi? Just make the sign of the cross…”
