Benitez to take over Newcastle?

Rafa Benitez is set to sign a three-year deal to succeed Steve McClaren as boss of Newcastle United, claims Cadena Cope.

The former Valencia, Liverpool and Inter Milan boss has been out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid in early January this year.

However, his representatives are believed to have indicated he would be interested in any potential vacancy at St James’ Park, should the Newcastle board of directors decide to dispense with Maclaren’s services.

The Magpies are deep in relegation trouble and while Benitez has always been open to a return to management in England, reports have it that initially he will only commit until the end of the season and intends to evaluate his situation then.

Benitez is understood to want to join a club with ambition and would insist on taking charge of all first team matters, while it is understood that he is likely to have offers from Germany, Italy, Spain and England this summer.
