‘Madrid squad made a statement’

Sergio Ramos hailed Real Madrid’s substitutes for “making a statement” during Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Roma in the Champions League last 16.

Jese Rodriguez came off the bench to fire a late second for Los Blancos, who had taken the lead via Cristiano Ronaldo, and the defender believes the winger’s finish underlined the strength in depth at Zinedine Zidane’s disposal.

“We’re very happy with the individual work, but most of all the team’s effort,” he said after the game, UEFA’s official website reports.

“We came out from the first minute with the plan of having the ball and we took an important step in the tie.

“During the break we decided that we were going to put an emphasis on having the ball. Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal came at a crucial time.

“It’s a good sign that those who came off the bench did so looking to make a statement. We’re on the right path, we have to carry on working together.”
