Gracia: I’ll be Malaga’s first critic

Javi Gracia has warned his Malaga players that he will be the first person to criticise them following Friday’s 3-0 victory over Getafe in La Liga.

The Andalucians opened up a four-point gap on Los Azulones in 10th place, courtesy of goals from Juanpi Anor, Christian Atsu and Charles, but the Coach was cautious with his praise when quizzed on the former’s performance.

“[The win] makes me optimistic about the team’s level, and the fans enjoyed it,” he said after the game.

“That’s very important for us. We want to have many more nights like this.

“We’re on a run of good performances, results and on a good path, with 30 points.

“It was a good game, very complete, and we got on track quickly.

“Our opponents asked a lot of us, but I’m happy for the goals and game. I think the fans had fun.

“Maintaining this run of results won’t be easy, but we’ll try to approach every point as if it was the last.

“[On Juanpi], the players are sacrificing themselves for the team’s balance.

“He showed what can do, but he can still do better and I’ll be the first to criticise him.

“[On Christian Atsu being subbed at half-time], it made perfect sense given his physical condition, and there was another lad [Ricardo Horta] who came on and did a good job, so I’m happy for him.”
