Nadal: Sorry for Benitez

Rafa Nadal expressed sympathy for Rafa Benitez but believes Zinedine Zidane is the right man to be Coach of Real Madrid.

Nadal, the world tennis No 5 and a Madrid supporter, was asked after beating Pablo Carreno in a tournament in Doha, what he made of the changing of the guard at Santiago Bernabeu.

“[Zidane] is part of the history of football and of sport. I know him, he’s a good person and deserves to be where he is,” Marca reports Nadal saying of the new trainer, who had been in charge of Real Madrid Castillla.

“It’s good for the players at one of the biggest clubs in the world to have someone like him on the bench.

“I’m sorry for Benitez, he wasn’t having the success I’m sure he hoped for and it’s hard to start a new project and leave so soon, but a change was necessary. Zidane was in the ideal position.”
