Benitez: I can’t prevent gossip

Rafa Benitez admits he can’t do anything to stop the gossip about his position, and lamented Real Madrid’s ‘loss of control’ in drawing with Valencia.

A thrilling game ended 2-2 and Benitez was disappointed his side let a first half lead slip moments before the interval, when Pepe brought down Andre Gomes and Dani Parejo scored from the penalty spot.

“We played well. In the first half, for 35 minutes, we had control. The second half was difficult but we worked well,” Benitez told the Press, AS reports, before discussing Mateo Kovacic’s straight red card.

“When we were down to 10 we had to make an effort and the players did. We could have won or we could have lost.

“Those 10 minutes in which we had no control in the first half can’t overshadow the other 35. Then we conceded a goal when we’ve made an effort to score the second. I don’t know if that’s to the opponent’s merit or a fault in our concentration. But the work of the players should be praised.”

Benitez returned to the theme of praising the players when asked about his position, as rumour continues that he won’t be on the Madrid bench much longer, and he was outright asked if he fears for his job.

“You’re entitled to ask the question but I think it is misguided. It’s a waste to only see the result,” he replied when it was pointed out Madrid missed the chance to pull Barcelona back after their Catalan derby draw with Espanyol.

“The effort made by the team deserves praise more than anything else. I can’t help that there’s speculation. What I can help is that the team works as they have done today.

“The team has made a great effort but unfortunately hasn’t gotten the three points.”
