Real Sociedad’s Sergio Canales could miss the rest of the season after reportedly damaging his anterior cruciate ligament against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The midfielder was visibly in distress as he left the Santiago Bernabeu in tears and on a stretcher just before half-time, his left knee having appeared to buckle when he collapsed to the ground unopposed.

Consequently, there are fears in the Spanish Press that Canales has sustained ligament damage for the third time in his career after initial scans.

The former Madrid starlet missed six months of the 2011-12 season while on loan at Valencia as he damaged the ACL in his right knee against Athletic Bilbao in October 2011.

He then suffered a recurrence of the setback on his comeback against Atletico Madrid in the Europa League six months later and spent the following year recovering from surgery.

La Real, meanwhile, have yet to comment on the reports.
