Deschamps: Benzema made a mistake

France boss Didier Deschamps believes Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema “made a mistake” for implicating himself in the Mathieu Valbuena blackmail case.

The 27-year-old risks missing Euro 2016 after being suspended by Les Bleus while he bids to clear his name from the case, and the Coach agreed with the French Football Federation’s (FFF) decision, citing an error of judgment on the player’s part.

“He made a mistake. He didn’t assess the situation in which he found himself,” he told Le Parisien.

“The players now have a way of speaking, which was unthinkable in my time. They have a different language.

“[The FFF’s decision to ban Benzema from international football] was coherent from a moral and ethical point of view, although the Press have been excessive in its treatment of him.”
