‘Alonso not leaving Bayern’

Bayern Munich President Karl-Heinz Rummennigge has denied former Spain international Xabi Alonso is getting ready to leave the club.

Alonso signed for the Bavarians in the summer of 2014, leaving Real Madrid, and his contract expires at the end of the season, with Rummennigge telling Sport Bild the intention is to sign him to a new one.

“Soon we’ll study the issue and have the appropriate conversation with Xabi and his agent. There’s no truth to the rumour he’s planning to say goodbye,” AS quotes Rummennigge as saying.

“He and his family feel very good about Bayern and the city. Essentially I’ve been given to understand that he is interested in staying. He’s a valuable player who occupies an important place in our team.”

Alonso has for his part suggested he will stay, or at least isn’t thinking of retirement just yet.

“I’m focused on this season. There’s time to decide what I’ll do. If everything’s right I could play for one, two or three years,” he noted.
