‘Benitez has to adapt to Madrid stars’

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard warns Rafa Benitez the big names in the Real Madrid squad won’t change to suit his methods.

Gerrard played under Benitez for the Reds and was part of the team that won the Champions League in 2005 and reached the final again in 2007, and shared with BT Sport his thoughts on his former manager.

“For me, Rafa is a good Coach. I just wonder about his relationship with the stars in that locker room. It certainly seems that it’s broken right now,” AS quotes the LA Galaxy midfielder as saying,

“The President has given him a vote of confidence, but at Real Madrid that usually doesn’t mean much. We have to wait and see what happens.

“Rafa is all about the team. His philosophy is as a team, he’s not a Coach who appreciates individuality much. But Madrid is all about the individuals, especially Cristiano Ronaldo and the big stars. Rafa has to adapt to them and not vice versa.”
