Benitez facing Madrid sack?

Rafa Benitez will reportedly be sacked by Real Madrid either now or in June after losing the confidence of the club’s board.

According to Marca, the Coach no longer has the backing of Los Blancos following their 4-0 Clasico defeat to Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu.

In addition, the board are reportedly of the opinion that the side lack an identity and are deteriorating with each game, with successive losses cancelling out their statistically-impressive start to the season.

Consequently, Madrid are now believed to be considering Benitez’s position, the only issue being whether to pull the plug now or at the end of the season.

There have also been suggestions that the former Valencia and Liverpool boss has a strained relationship with the team’s senior players, including Cristiano Ronaldo.

Benitez replaced Carlo Ancelotti in June, with President Florentino Perez claiming the managerial change would breed “momentum” in the squad.

However, both the trainer and patron were subjected to resignation chants by their own fans, who also waved white handkerchiefs, during the Clasico.

Castilla boss and club legend Zinedine Zidane and training director Victor Fernandez – the latter of whom has plenty of coaching experience in La Liga – have been touted as early frontrunners to replace Benitez.
