Benzema, Valbuena out of France squad

Neither Karim Benzema nor Mathieu Valbuena have been called up by France in the squad to play Germany and England amid a blackmail case involving the pair.

Benzema was on Thursday charged for his involvement in an alleged attempt to extort money from Lyon forward Valbuena over the existence of a sex tape.

“With regards to Karim, I learned he would be unavailable after speaking with him on Monday,” Coach Didier Deschamps revealed, AS reports.

“He’s injured. He hasn’t played for Real Madrid, so he wasn’t available.

“On the issue which is in the hands of the authorities, I haven’t seen the report. It’s best to let the law do its work.

“As for Valbuena, even if he hasn’t been efficient with Lyon in this time, I’m sure you will understand that he’s not in the best psychological condition.

“I’ve decided to put this matter to one side. I suspect there will be a lot of questions that don’t concern football. I won’t answer them.”

There is nevertheless La Liga representation in Les Bleus’ squad, with Alphonse Areola, on loan at Villarreal from Paris Saint-Germain, getting a call-up.

Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann, over Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid respectively, are also included, as is former Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra, now at Marseille.
