‘Barca in Ligue 1? There’s Monaco…’

Prime Minister of France Manuel Valls has suggested Barcelona could play in Ligue 1 should Catalonia become independent from Spain.

Barcelona-born Valls was speaking in an interview with Challenges magazine and his comments have been picked up by AS, who report the politician welcomed the idea of La Blaugrana entering the French football system.

“After all, Monaco play in Ligue 1,” he is quoted as saying when the subject was raised.

Monaco represent the principality of Monaco but have always been part of the French football set-up, turning professional at the invitation of the French Football Federation in 1933.

They have claimed the title seven times and this season represented France in the Champions League, losing a play-off to Valencia.

AS notes Valls has previously spoken of his support for Barcelona and was elected President of France in 2014, having lived in Spain until moving to France as a teenager.
