Tebas: La Liga games played abroad

LFP President Javier Tebas has revealed plans to play Copa del Rey and Primera fixtures outside Spain in the future.

Tebas was speaking at an event in London, the Sports Business Summit, and confirmed that while there’s not yet a mechanism that allows for League games to be played in a foreign country, it is something he would like to explore.

“In the medium term we will play Cup or League matches abroad. In the short term it’s not possible,” he said, AS reports.

“We can’t yet say where these matches will be played. We need to develop projects and, of course, get the permits from UEFA and FIFA. Of course, FIFA is now occupied with corruption.”

Tebas further discussed La Liga’s future growth, insisting that there is no language barrier that could prevent Spanish football taking root elsewhere.

“English isn’t crucial to win followers. Regardless of the language our teams can grow and be able to compete. If we have stars then Japan, Indonesia and many more countries will watch Spanish football.

“The United States, China and Africa are strategic locations for the growth of Spanish football. In three or four years there’ll particularly be growth in Africa, due to the use of mobile phones.”

Tebas moved on to the idea of a European Super League, encompassing the top clubs from across the continent, and said while the proposal could be successful, it would have serious consequences.

“It could be a great competition but it would destroy local Leagues,” he warned.

“The Bundesliga is the most solvent League in the world. The Premier League is the one that makes the most money from the media. La Liga wins all the trophies.

“We want to be in first place in all aspects, not just the sporting side. We’re working on it.”
