Mel: Blame me for Betis red cards

Pepe Mel isn’t concerned by Real Betis’ disciplinary record after two red cards in as many games. ‘The players were sent off doing what I told them to…’

Petros Matheus was dismissed in the win over Real Sociedad while Dani Ceballas was sent off in the goalless draw at Valencia, but Mel is ok with the situation.

“We’ve had two expulsions because my players did what I told them to: play with intensity, press, put their foot in,” he explained at a Press conference to preview Thursday’s game against Deportivo La Coruna.

“That’s the Betis I want. If the red cards were for childish things, then I would be upset.”

Mel moved on to stress the importance of regularly picking up points if Betis are to avoid dropping straight back to the Segunda.

“We got a point on Saturday that we deserved and we’ve been good at home. We know how long the Primera is and we’re following a pattern so we can enjoy it,” he continued.

“The important thing is to keep adding. The players are focused on the match. We have to see all the versions of Betis with a mature team that wants to do things and has the ingredients for a good season.”

Mel also moved to keep the focus on the pitch after further unrest in the boardroom in recent weeks.

“The most important thing at a football club is the football,” he insisted.

“The hopes of the Betis fans are up to us. We’ve just started and they’re optimistic. It’s important and that won’t change.”
