Nuno: Football is cruel

Nuno Santo lamented the cruelty of football after Valencia lost their Champions League opener at home to Zenit St Petersburg.

Zenit took a two-goal lead at Mestalla only for the hosts to restore parity, then lose to a late Axel Witsel third.

“We had our head and our heart and they had three shots and three goals,” the Coach complained, AS reports.

“That is effective football. Everyone who saw the game will believe we were more likely to score than Zenit. We played a good game but we weren’t effective. We created a lot.

“Sometimes football is cruel. Zenit scored more goals but we’ll recover quickly. We don’t stop, now thinking about Saturday. Our ambition is to get out the groups.

“There are six games. It was important to win but now we have to prepare to play Real Betis, then Lyon and continue with this attitude.

“I’m not happy with the result but I am happy with the attitude. I’m excited about the future. This is the Valencia we want.

“We have to improve defensively so they don’t have so many chances. We didn’t fail in our preparation. The mistakes are a team process and an individual process.”
