Gomes banking on full Mestalla

Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes believes that if Mestalla is full for the Champions League game against Zenit St. Petersburg, Valencia can’t lose.

Gomes returned from injury in the weekend win over Sporting Gijon and is expected to be involved when the Russians visit in the first round of European matches.

“In truth it was very hard working away from the squad, not having a break, but it was good to come back and help,” he said, AS reports.

“I enjoyed it in Gijon but I’m not at the same pace as my teammates. I was hungry and eager, but I felt more tired after. I am happy to be back and want to thank everyone who helped me.

“I felt the nerves [in the play-off] against Monaco. I knew it would be difficult and the work of a whole year was at stake. Now in the group stage we must pull together.

“It was important and difficult to win in Gijon and now comes another tough game. We’re at Mestalla and we have to win.

“We’re not concerned about the match and we know with a full Mestalla it’s another experience. We want people to come and fill Mestalla. If it’s 99% full it affects the opponent and when Mestalla is with us, it’s another thing altogether.

“Zenit will be tough but we’re at Mestalla and we have a responsibility.”
