Benitez: Madrid have to improve

Rafa Benitez admits Real Madrid are not at the level he wants after Los Blancos toiled against Galatasaray.

Madrid won the Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu match 2-1 but were not impressive in doing so and, speaking to the Press after the match, Benitez acknowledged as much.

“If we were at the point I wanted now, I’d be worried. We’re ok but we need to improve a lot,” he said, AS reports.

“There were good things but we lacked the control to make the match easier. It’s also true that Gala are a good team.

“We’ve done some positive things but it’s a positive that we have room for improvement.

“Obviously my first match [at the Bernabeu] is exciting. I usually concentrate on the game. That’s what Coaches have to do.

“It was emotional as I pictured [the Bernabeu] as it was in other times, but mostly I was focused. The advantage was that we had alternatives and I could use them all if possible.

“I’m not worried [that the strikers aren’t scoring]. We know Cristiano Ronaldo will get his chances. We’ve had 22 shots on goal.

“I’m convinced the forwards will give us a lot of goals. We’ve recovered faster in many phases of the game. I’m more worried about closing down the ball better.

“The fans have to help us. We’ll help them and I have no doubt the Bernabeu will be a positive place. Let’s have intensity and play good games. If we do it right it will be easier for everyone.”
