Bartomeu: Barca fought

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu was pleased with the way the team fought in a losing Supercopa de Espana effort against Athletic Bilbao.

Athletic claimed a first trophy in more than 30 years with a 5-1 aggregate win over La Blaugrana, and Bartomeu didn’t deny the Basques were worthy winners.

“Of course we would have liked to win, but Athletic won deservedly,” he said, AS reports.

“But I prefer the image of the team that fought and worked.

“It was very difficult. The players have struggled to their maximum and worked hard but it wasn’t to be. We’ll take the effort and the support, almost 90,000 people who supported at all times.

“We come from the UEFA Super Cup, with little time to rest, but every summer we would like the same, to play the UEFA Super Cup and the Supercopa de Espana.”
