Monchi dismisses ‘moral victory’

Sevilla sporting director Monchi dismissed the idea of a ‘moral victory’ in his club’s UEFA Super Cup final defeat to Barcelona.

Los Rojiblancos went in front then went 4-1 behind, only to recover to 4-4 and then lose 5-4 after extra time in an astonishing game.

“I appreciate the sacrifice the team has made and they didn’t give up, with the sorrow for not having obtained the ultimate prize,” he said, AS reports.

“I don’t feel a moral victory. There are positive things. The team has shown a lot of character and I’m happy with that effort, but not for failing to win the trophy.

“We still have a lot of ground to cover and a lot of work to do. The team is growing, we’ve had Vicente Iborra injured, problems in pre-season, but we’ve reinforced the team. We’ll continue to grow.

“Let the fans be proud of this team, with sympathy and forgiveness for not having succeeded, but we haven’t lost our competitive nature. We all have that.”
