Monchi: I rejected Barca

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has revealed that he recently turned down an offer to join Barcelona from presidential candidate Agusti Benedito.

Speaking to RAC1 on Saturday, the 46-year-old admitted he could not leave the Andalucians “as that’s where I’m happy” and gave his opinion on the UEFA Super Cup, Barca new boy Aleix Vidal, fellow right-back Douglas and forwards Denis Suarez and Gerard Deulofeu.

“Benedito called me before the presidential campaign, but I told him that I wouldn’t leave Sevilla as that’s where I’m happy,” he told RAC1.

“I was hoping Messi and Neymar would return with little rhythm after their holidays but, during the Gamper Trophy against Roma, it became clear that wasn’t the case.

“I really liked how Barca played [in the Gamper Trophy] because I saw them play with the same intensity as they did last season.

“[Aleix Vidal] has deadly pace and good technique, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to compare his game to that of Dani Alves.

“It’s true that [Douglas] was one of the options that we had to reinforce our team.

“[Denis Suarez] is here for two years and will see [the two years] out.

“[Gerard Deulofeu] is very young and must be patient in establishing himself [at Everton].

“He may only be 21, but he has the conditions to succeed.”
